Your Breakfast Is Interesting to Others. ?

My coworker Erin sent this along this morning. I thought it was pretty funny.


It made me think a little bit about how prolific in-the-moment Internet social networking and messenging is now, but mostly it made me think about what I had for breakfast, which was:

A cupcake the size of my car.


Just kidding. I was late to work as usual, so all I had for breakfast was a hard-boiled egg and some stale cookies. But if I had eaten this for breakfast,


I would want to tell everyone about it immediately, by whatever means possible. So thank goodness for Twitter and Facebook. I think.

And now, I'm off to lunch. I'm going to Pine State Biscuits, if you must know, and I intend to order the Reggie Deluxe--buttermilk biscuit, thick-cut bacon, fried egg, cheddar cheese, sausage gravy, and let's not forget the hunk of buttermilk fried chicken. I'll be sure to tell you all about it, but probably not while in mid-bite. Good food is always for sharing, but first and foremost for savoring.

Reunited and Hungry

Jen and I are celebrating being back together after our week apart.  The feast at the Nines includes Wagyu beef sliders, Caesar Salad, a leg of lamb skewer, the ugliest black bean soup ever, and a miniature milkshake and three fresh from the oven cookies.  All this and a goblet of Liberty Creek Cabernet for the bargain price of $33... Happy Hour 3-6 pm daily!

Have Your Bacon Placemat And Eat Off It Too


Note: This is not my butt. I eat too much bacon for this to be my butt.

There are few things in the universe that are better than bacon. Which is why there are entire websites devoted to bacon, entire blogs devoted to bacon recipes (motto: "one bacon recipe a day, every day, forever") , a picture of a woman wearing a bacon bra circulating the Internet, and why two guys invented Bacon Salt, a "zero calorie, zero fat, vegetarian and kosher seasoning that makes everything taste like bacon," which a fan then actually tattooed a picture of on his arm.

I could go on for days because there is a bottomless bacon subculture out there, but my point in writing this post really was just to show you what I want for my birthday, which is only 253 days away.

Last year, I got Mr. Bacon vs. Monsieur Tofu for my birthday.


This year I want a bacon lunch pail. Because it's magical, and because I need something to keep my Bacon Salt and Baconnaise in. What's that? You did not realize that Baconnaise had been invented? Well, it has. By the makers of Bacon Salt, in fact. Those clever, clever men.
I would also like a set of bacon placemats.


And last but not least, for when I need some guidance, the What Would Bacon Do spinner.

So now that I've shared my heart's deepest bacon desires with you, I'm off to try my hand at making the now famous (infamous?) Bacon Explosion, which is bacon wrapped in sausage wrapped in more bacon. OMG.


And that reminds me, I must share with you Grateful Palate's BACON TOILETPAPER, billed as "the gift for bacon lovers who have everything." Wow. -J

Me and My Lucky Ladybug Will See You At Ping TONIGHT!

This morning I woke up with a fluttery feeling of excitement so profound I thought it was Christmas again. I also woke up with a ladybug crawling on my neck, which was weird, but it all made sense when I checked my calendar for the day.

You see, finding a ladybug in your house--or presumably, on your neck--in winter is good luck, and Ping restaurant opens today, and you can't tell me the two aren't related. Because I've been walking by the Ping space in the old Hung Far Low Building in Chinatown for months, pressing my Pearl Bakery-sticky fingers up against the glass and chanting "Open, Open, Open!" like one of those deranged shoppers in that old Mervyn's ad campaign. Today, my dream is realized.

The brainchild of Pok Pok Executive Chef Andy Ricker, W+K superman John Jay, and a couple of other owners (sorry, I'm sure they're great people but Andy and John Jay are the only two I recognize), Ping is no Pok Pok II, but intends to branch out--way out, across the continent of Asia, offering up a melange of Asian foods, some of which I'm sure we've never seen or heard of, and probably can't pronounce either! Ping also aspires to be a magnetic neighborhood destination to meet, eat, and trade deep, thoughtful conversation. (Thus, I will keep my shallow thoughtless conversation about last night's episode of The Bachelor on the hungfardownlow when I am there.)

Ping's website, www.pingpdx.com, is up but outfitted with limited information. But really, all you need to know is that Ping opens at 4 pm TODAY, and will continue to do so henceforth, Monday through Saturday.

Now if you will excuse me, my ladybug and I are going to go make an effigy of me from old coffee grounds and cheesecloth to prop up behind my desk, so we can spring this coop at 3:55 pm and run down the street to Ping to watch them open, open, open the doors for the FIRST TIME!

Valentines Table Talk Style- Meal #1

Valentines has been a big deal for Jen and I since we were kids. Mom used to decorate the entire house in red and pink, serve heart waffles, have a valentines day outfit for us to wear to school, and send us to school with the most beautiful heart shaped pink frosted cookies anyone ever saw. So, ever since then I have treated Valentines as a national holiday... Jen sort of acts like she hates the commercialization of it, but secretly she loves it as much as I do!

This weekend the BF and I decided why not spend the entire weekend marking this national holiday by eating our way through it. We have BIG dinner plans every night and I thought I would blog the entire way through...

Let's start with Meal #1. I woke up this morning and made heart shaped scones (I know it is a little cheesy, but blame mom), blackberry preserves, peppered bacon, and coffee. We are trying to fast (some of you might not consider this fasting) as much as we can, because tonight we are going to a 6 hour meal at the Herb Farm.

Recipe for Scones:
2 cups flour
1 Tbsp baking powder
3 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
5 Tbsp cold unsalted butter
1 cup heavy cream

Place flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a bowl and mix. Cut in cold butter and mix. Stir in heavy cream and use a fork to mix it. It is a very dry batter, but if it isn't coming together at all then add more cream. I always knead it a few times. Put in muffin pan all the way to the top of the pan and bake at 425 degrees for 12-15 minutes until golden brown on top. Serve with strawberry preserves, butter, or lemon curd.
